ST. JOHN 162, FOREST 170: At Golden Hills, Teddy Lausier medaled for the Saints after shooting 37.

Kristine Odaiyar had a 41 for St. John, while Forest's Mac MacKay and Kyle Staley each shot a 42.

St. John (5-3) is back in action Tuesday against First Academy at Golden Hills.

Saints Recognize National Day of Prayer

Waking up earlier than usual is not a pleasurable experience, but on the national day of prayer, See You at The Pole, it is quite rewarding. The idea started from teenagers in Texas; a group on a mission to seek and pray to the Lord in early 1990. This Wednesday, many St. John students, parents, and faculty gathered at the flag pole in front of the school to express their love for God at this national annual event held in mid-October.   St. John chapel band playing songs and students singing to glorify God proved to be a powerful scene.  About midway through the event, students huddled into small groups and prayed. This event is always signified by students wearing white.  See You at The Pole is an event so simple, but has such a big impact on students and their love for God.

Owls of Ocala

          Students of St. John Lutheran were in for an adventure this Monday because they were able to see a real owl, upclose, thanks to the Ocala Wildlife Sanctuary. OWLS is a non-profit organization committed to providing humane care to all wild-life birds. Owls are their main rescues. They have been rescuing and caring for birds for over fifteen years. In order to raise awareness, the Ocala Wildlife Sanctuary goes to schools and the community, explaining their mission and goals to people of all ages. “Our goal today is actually to bring awareness to the students, what gifts we are given here on Earth, and how we should respect them and appreciate them. And to always help out whenever possible for others also” says Keith Belisle, President-CEO of Ocala Wildlife Sanctuary.
         The presentation to the students started with Keith Belisle and Kenneth Lane who talked about owls’ daily routine. They explained how owls help people as “pest control” so that the students would know that these animals should not be harmed. A very special owl to the sanctuary, Hobie, was introduced to the students. Belisle explained how Hobie was one of their animal cruelty cases because she was caught in a snare-type trap and someone chopped off her wing with a machete. Belisle believes that they do make a huge difference because they go out and do a number of rescues and release the birds, once healed, back to the wild. Kindergarten student, Isabella Roscoe, says about the owl presentation, "I like that she tried to fly and it was so cool." Another student, Matt Larson from first grade, says his favorite animals are owls and one thing he learned from the presentation was that baby owls jump from branches. All in all, the presentation was a success enabling the students to learn more about wild-life rescues.  Saints students brought in supplies and donations for OWLS, which were greatly appreciated.

Adam Morrison, Savannah Mutchler and Abigail Sellers won cute stuffed owls to remember their meeting with Hobie.  A special thanks to all students who donated supplies to help OWLS of Ocala.

Girl Scouts & Brownies serving seniors

Last Sunday was Grandparent's Day and the Girl Scout and Brownie Troop 281 sponsored by St. John Lutheran School made it special for several seniors who didn't have family to share it with.  Camelot Chateau sits adjacent to the school, so this was a great opportunity for the students to interact, share some ice cream and pass out handmade cards to their "neighbors."  Thank you Troop 281 for your "sweet service."Girl Scouts & Brownies giving to Grandparents

...and the results are in!

If you will remember our post from September 2nd, Mrs. Mennicke's Seventh Grade Science Class conducted an experiment on Keeping Flowers Fresh.  The class hypothesized which they thought would keep flowers freshest the longest, water alone, or sugar water.  Below are the results!

• 18 students hypothesized that the sugar would keep the flowers fresher longer, and 13 were correct and 5 were not correct.
• 9 students hypothesized that the sugar would not keep the flowers fresher longer, and 5 were correct that it did not keep them fresher and 4 were incorrect, and the sugar did keep them fresh longer.

Overall, it looks like sugar water wins!! The next time you have fresh cut flowers, remember this tip to keep them fresh longer. Thank you Mrs. Mennicke and our Seventh Grade Scientists.
