Senior Moment: Hanna Marcus

Hanna Marcus, a senior student, is going on her seventh year at St. John Lutheran. She enjoys being a senior and is involved in many school activities. For example, she is a member of student council, National Honor Society, a class representative, and the president of Anchor Club. She is also on the varsity volleyball team where she is captain for the second year in a row. Her favorite class at St. John Lutheran is economics with Mrs. Janousky, who is also her favorite teacher. In addition, Hanna takes classes on Monday and Wednesday at College of Central Florida through the dual-enrollment program. After graduation, she hopes to attend the University of Florida and major in zoology so she can become a zoologist. Hanna has been very motivated by her teachers and her friend Laina who has been very encouraging to her. Hanna’s most cherished school memory occurred during her junior year when she jokingly stole her friend’s box of Girl Scout cookies. She explained how she ran away with them and her friend chased her all around the courtyard during lunch but then tripped over a rope in front of the whole high-school. Many memories have been created at St. John Lutheran and Hanna says that the school has impacted her life by enabling her to create close friendships with everyone in her class.

Celebrating our SAINTS Seniors...Senior Moment

To celebrate and recognize the next graduating class at St. John, our journalism staff will be writing about each student who chooses to participate.  Some have been students here since K3, and others have only been with us this year, but they have each become a part of the St. John tradition.  You will notice a special feature every week about one of our Saints Seniors as part of the graduating Class of 2011.  Today we will post the first SENIOR MOMENT, but watch for them throughout the rest of this semester!!

Readers Visit Campus for Altrusa Read In 2010

Students and teachers look forward to the annual Altrusa Reader visiting their classroom each September.  We have had them visiting our campus for 17 years.

Altrusa is an organization made up of business women who promote literacy.  This year we had a reader in grades PK-4th grade. Thank you to our readers: PK—Mrs. Joanie Morrison, K—Mrs. Kelley Spears, 1st—Mrs. Robin Gray, 2nd—Mrs. Debby Wilkinson, 3rd—Mrs. Stephanie Hagins, and 4th—Mr. Ryan Kirby, Saints class of 2009 graduate.  Our readers included moms, a grandmother and an alumni.  If you don’t believe children love to be read to, you should have seen how intently they were listening in every room! Thank you Altrusa for including St. John in the annual Read-In!!!!

Saints Volleyball Team Defeats Meadowbrook Academy

St. John Lutheran's Varsity volleyball team wins against Meadowbrook Academy's volleyball teams last night. Opposing player for Meadowbrook's Varsity team, Jessica Kelly,  says the Saints volleyball team is really good and that she thought the game was very intense. Team captain of the Saints Varsity Volleyball Team, Hanna Marcus, says about last nights game, “We could’ve done a lot better, but I definitely thing it’s going to help us improve for Thursday when we play Oak Hall”.   All Saints teams were victorious last night against Meadowbrook, beginning with 5th/6th grade girls team winning in two games (25-19 and 25-18), 7th/8th grade girls winning in two games (25-10 and 25-15), and finally, the Varsity Saints team winning in 3 games (25-15, 25-22 and 25-18).  Way to go Saints!!

St. John Goes Green

       "To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down." "If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year." These are a few statements that were made in a youtube video named Why Recycle 101 at the beginning of the first Go Green meeting at St. John Lutheran School. Students have started making a change in the worlds environment for the past few years according to Recycling.org. St. Johns has just begun their recycling program, but their club leaders hope it will make a great change in Ocala.

            The Go Green club plans on doing many things this year for our environment. One would be putting paper bins in classrooms for used paper that will be recycled. The club is planning on picking up trash in the Saints Cafe one day each week at lunch. They are planning on doing things outside of school also, like picking up trash on the highway. The Go Green club will be raising money through what they are calling "Lunch Line Awareness," which will be a bucket in the concession stand for spare change.  Proceeds will go towards the purchase of recycling bins for St. Johhn.

            The first official Go Green meeting at St. Johns Lutheran School was held on September 21st. Kelli Ozcel, the president of the Go Green club, had a very good and organized presentation planned for the first meeting.  The meetings for Go Green will be every other Tuesday, starting with the first Tuesday of the month, during lunch. This years board for the Go Green club includes, Kelli Ozcel as president, Morgan Zack as vice president, Shelby Nazzari as secretary, and Holly Tackett as chaplain. When asked how she wants Go Green to influence the school, Kelli Ozcel said, "I am hoping that St. John students won't be so wasteful during lunch!" Make sure to come to the next Go Green meeting on October 5th!

Saints Win Again!

ST. JOHN 167, FIRST ACADEMY 226: At Golden Hills, Teddy Lausier medaled with a low round of 38. Teammates Colton Godwin (41), Micheal Skinner (43) and Eric Williams (45) all had productive rounds to power the Saints secure.

St. John (6-3) hosts Mount Dora Bible at Golden Hills on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Saints Football Wins Big: Saints 41 Faith Baptist 13

Saints football traveled to Plant City last Friday night and returned home victorious!

At Faith Baptist, Winston Jalloh and Caleb Alexander helped turn the game around from a 13-6, first quarter deficit to a second-half shutout for the Saints. 
Jalloh carried the ball into the end zone three times while Alexander and Bryant Fortune also contributed touchdowns to St. John.
Saints quarterback Tyler Rotstein also got in on the action, connecting a 44-yard pass to Justin Whaley for a touchdown. 
St. John (3-1) hosts Hernando Christian on October 8th.
