National Honor Society Inductions

The National Honor Society (NHS) is an amazing opportunity to be a part of making a difference. Its official name is the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote leadership, and develop character in the students of secondary schools.

In the past, NHS has collected canned goods, tutored younger students, and taken part in Operation Christmas Child. This year NHS members are planning on playing a bigger role in their school and community. Faculty Adviser, Mr. Alan Reidel, states that, "I want the National Honor Society to make a difference in people's lives." Brainstorming has started and they are ready to take action in making this difference.

At the end of the year the members of NHS will be running for the offices of Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Chaplain for the next school year. The Vice President, Jenny Koch, will automatically take over the position of President. She has many service opportunities up her sleeves and can't wait to share them.

This year's NHS members are so excited to have new members that share the same ideas about making a difference. Congratulations to all the new NHS members!

One Day Without Shoes - BARE YOUR SOLE

Anchor Club is sponsoring One Day Without Shoes on Tuesday, April 10th

What is One Day Without Shoes? The day we spread awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child's life by taking off our own. Why? Millions of children live without proper footwear, exposing them to injury and disease every day.

How will One Day Without Shoes work? There are two simple steps!

1) BARE YOUR SOLE-Wear socks to school! No shoes!
2) SHARE-Bring in a pair of shoes to share with feet in need! Any shoes! Any size!
*) Get a FREE T-SHIRT as a Thank You for your support! :)
This is an event for High School only! Join with us and BARE YOUR SOLE!

Lights, Camera, Action!

Written By: Elizabeth Rockey

Lights, Camera, Action! Actors and actresses have traced the stage for years at St. John Lutheran. Drama was performing when Producer and Sponsor Susan Ergle was in grade school. St. John took an intermission and started again in 2006 with the premiere of Anne of Green Gables. Mrs. Ergle didn’t start this program up again alone. Kim Sandstrom-Hawksey, a theatre extraordinaire, stepped up to the plate to pull up the curtains on drama. Since the first production, Saints on Stage has performed The Beverly Hillbillies, Cheaper By the Dozen, Annie Jr., Willy Wonka Jr., and most recently Meet Me in St. Louis. While Saints on Stage has always been open to any and all Middle and High School students, this 2011-2012 year was the “Start of Something New.”

Saints on Stage invited Elementary students starting in third grade to join the cast and crew. Saints on Stage introduced a nine class training session suitable for students with little or no theatre experience. As the bible verse says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

“Here at Saints on Stage we not only train great actors; we train great audiences too.” says Kim Sandstrom-Hawksey. These theatre workshops ended with a Dinner Theatre Showcase on January 25th, when audiences gave a standing ovation for their wonderful performance. The finale officially announced this spring’s musical, which is holding open auditions for middle and high school students. The show is sure to be a hit for all ages.  There have even been a few hints throughout this article as to which musical it is. Can you guess? We aren't "Sticking to the Status Quo" this year. Saints on Stage is proud to be producing "High School Musical!" "Bigger, better, louder, stronger, better!" as Mrs. Sandstrom-Hawksey always says. That is something Saints on Stage strives for each year, to top the best of the last year and make it better for the next.
Saints on Stage had an amazing time presenting their scenes for the Dinner Theatre Showcase and look forward to upcoming events and future performances. For elementary students, there will be a special Saints on Stage Summer Camp. More information is soon to come. For middle and high Schoolers, auditions for the Spring Showcase are February 1st and 2nd. They can't wait to start rehearsing for this spring’s musical and we're sure you can't wait to see it. Be on the lookout for order forms for "High School Musical" tickets to see the one and only Saints on Stage drama team and for participating in our Saints on Stage Summer Camp.

Saints Giving Back this Christmas

Written By: Elizabeth Rockey
Brooke Land, sophomore, showing the love of Christ to the little ones at Love INC

Anchor Club and Mrs. Fontaine sponsored a Toy Drive for Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC) in the true spirit of Christmas and giving back. Love In the Name of Christ of the Heart of Florida is an organization made up of area churches, agencies, ministries, and community organizations working together, across denominational lines to identify, verify, and meet the needs of the tri-county area. Students flooded Mrs. Fontaine's classroom with toys. Some of our Saints had the opportunity to meet the children and help those in need with the annual gift giving. We are so proud our Saints for shining the light of Christ to those in need.

SEE YOU AT THE POLE in Review

"Our God is greater. Our God is stronger. God, You are higher than any other. Our God is healer. Awesome in power. Our God. Our God," our Saints students sang in honor of the day that celebrates national prayer. See You At the Pole, was held on September 28th. This is an annual event that St. John recognizes and coordinates students, staff and parents to start the morning early with a group prayer led by our Prayer Force and songs led by the chapel band.. With about 200 St. John students and parents praising God and about a million more around the world, God was there as we all convened. "It was great to see the kids lifting up their school in prayer and praise," reflects St. John teacher Rebecca Schaffer. Students were driven by a simple promise from Matthew 18:20, "Whenever two or three of you come together in my name, I am there with you," or were they driven by the donuts? No. Prayer was put first. Students and parents rallied and converged at St. John's front flagpole to pray for their friends, school, city, and nation. There was no greater way to start the day than with a God who is greater, stronger, healer, and awesome in power: Our God.

Anchored in Love

Anchor Newbies all dressed up for Taps Week
Written By Elizabeth Rockey
Did you catch a glimpse of the gang from Toy Story on last Tuesday morning during morning car line? Woody, Dino, Mrs. Piggy, Barbie, Little Bo Peep and her sheep, Buzz, Slink, an alien, an army man, and the rest of the Toy Story crew were all there! Do you know why? It was Anchor Taps Dress-up Week 2011!
Anchor Club is an extracurricular activity centered on service. It is a club providing volunteer services to those in need in our community.  Anchor Club is part of Pilot International and is sponsored or cosponsored by a District Pilot Club or a Pilot Member in the local community.
Pilot International has been undertaking service projects involving youth and their needs since it was chartered in 1921. Anchor Clubs were adopted by Pilot programs in 1952. Anchor is now over fifty years old and is composed of 9,000 male and female students in nearly 260 clubs. Anchor can be found throughout the United States, Bahamas, and Japan. Our favorite club is the St. John Anchor Club, founded in the mid 1970's.
This year's theme for all Anchor affiliations is "Anchored in Love." This theme encourages student members to remember we are brought together in brotherly and sisterly love to serve and love those in need. Being part of the St. John Anchor Club is more than just dressing up one week out of the school year for Taps Week. Being a member encourages community and campus service.
Watch out! While Anchor Club may not be all decked out and dressed up like the last time you saw them, they will be "Anchored in Love," remembering our school theme of Philippians 2:5, serving and loving those in need with an attitude as that of Christ Jesus. Look for more information about their upcoming events and check out their "St. John Anchor Club" Facebook page and "like" it to see what they are doing to serve God and give to those in need.

Homecoming Queen crowned at halftime of game

It is always fun to get an unexpected visit from an old friend.  That is just how it felt today as familiar faces popped up all over campus as alumni visited the school and arrived early for the football game. The homecoming game started with the traditional fan tunnel for the Saints and tonight, the elementary choir sang the National Anthem before kick off.  Rebecca Schaffer, St. John Lutheran Music Director, worked on this rendition for several weeks and the students were very excited to perform for the crowd.  The Saints played well in the first half, but nothing could compare to the excitement that was building, anticipating the Homecoming Court crowning at half time.

The Homecoming Court nominees looked beautiful as their families escorted them to the field.  Each young lady had selected a special dress for the night and their father or mother proudly escorted them across the field as something special was announced about each one over the loud speakers.  Friends and fans clapped and cheered, making each girl feel very special.  A special congratulations to our beautiful Homecoming Court:  Freshman Princess Sophie Fischer, and attendants Naomi Cano and Sarah Poehlman;  Sophomore Princess Alysha Burnett, and attendants Caley Carbaugh and Holly Tackett;  Junior Princess Samantha Oliver and attendants Lissette Babalian and Tori Townley; and Senior Princesses Hanna Marcus and Chloe Wilcox, and attendants Lauren Pacheco, Katie Revis and Laina Wilcox;  and the St. John Lutheran School 2010 Homecoming Queen Rachael Mack.
